The plant, authorized with a Single Authorization (pursuant to Legislative Decree 387/03, and thus declared of public interest) was built in 2010 by assembling about 25,000 polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules, produced and guaranteed by the Hyundai Group, including fixed ground structures (supplied by Schletter); the energy converters are Xantrex central inverters, manufactured and guaranteed by the Schneider Electric group, which also worked as EPC contractor.

The plant is built in two independent sub-sections, with peak power levels of 3,066 kWp and 2,642 kWp respectively. The plant was connected to the network and entered into service in February 2011. Access to the system is from the road “Valle Strona” (north of Lake D'Orta) in Germagno, which extends down the eastern shore (company-owned woodland), and by crossing the private footbridge over the Strona river (tributary of Lake D'Orta and located about 3 km to the south). On the western shore, in the municipality of Quarna Sopra, there are the two factory buildings with the power plant and the former caretaker's house; 215 metres upstream is the sedimentation tank into which the water taken from the two intakes flows; the intakes are each about 200 metres away along the ridge.

Description

The plant, in existence since the 1930s and used for the power consumption of industries active in the valley, was first connected to the Enel network in 1989. The concession was renewed until 2040, and in 2014 the plant received provincial approval (pursuant to Legislative Decree 387/03) for plant reconstruction, aimed at obtaining the all-inclusive tariffs pursuant to Ministerial Decree 6.7.2012. The plant returned to commercial operation in April 2015.

The plant draws water, on concession, from two intake works at a certain height above the Vercio and Boneccio streams (concession 80.1 kW) that flow into the sedimentation tank connected with a penstock (diameter 350 mm) and with a fall of 215 metres. In the power plant building, the Orengine Pelton vertical axis turbine of 335 kW is oversized to ensure the turbine action during peak flows; in times of lesser flow, the double jet optimizes the efficiency of the turbine, which powers the 350 kW Marelli Motori generator. The plant is fully leased to a company responsible for operation and maintenance, and which sells the energy produced to GSE.
